Deployement of such networks can lead to random node positions whereas location information is critical for more and more applications. Therefore it is key to localize nodes with low energy consumption and even where GPS radio signal can't be received by nodes. How does it works ? Many algorithms have been published on node localization. We decided to start our work on energy-efficient localization with common trilateration range-based algorithm. Let's assume a network of unlocalized nodes and only 3 of them have been manually downloaded with their respective XY coordinates. Theses 3 nodes serve as "anchor nodes" for neighborhood nodes, ie nodes with a one-hope connectivity to the anchor-nodes. With trilateration mechanism, nodes within on-hope distance of anchor nodes can evaluate their own location. Once they get their own XY coordinates they become new anchor nodes that can support location of 2-hope nodes. And so on, nodes change from "unlocalized state" to "localized state". Opnet simulation and results We have simulated the behavior of a network of nodes placed randomly on a plane. Node count varies from 150 to 2400. Transmission is based on a pure CSMA process. We have used OPNET simulation tool with wireless software package. Published papers S. Tanvir, B. Ponsard, Percolation of Localization in WSNs, 9th Performance Evaluation Workshop, AEP9, Aussois, France, 01-04 June 2008 Further works We will investigate detailed behavior of location information propagation and optimization of MAC messages exchange. More information This work is based on OPNET programming of a wireless sensor network made by Thi-Thai HA -master student at INP Grenoble TELECOM- during her 2006 summer internship in ICP lab. This work is part of INPG research project OCELO. Further investigations are conducted by Sadaf TANVIR, PhD student at LIG.
